Timothy Backous, OSB has been a monk of St. John's Abbey since 1979. He grew up in South Dakota and attended St. John's University where he earned a BA in English in 1976. At the Alphonsianum in Rome, Italy, he was awarded a License and Doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1989. Since returning home, Timo has also been a part of the Residential Life program at Saint John's, living with the students as a faculty resident and serving as the Coordinator of the program. For nine years, he was the Director of Campus Ministry and for five years worked as Athletic Director for the University. In July 2006 he became the Headmaster for St. John's Preparatory School, the oldest private secondary school in Minnesota. He also serves on the pastoral staff for St. Mary's Basilica in Minneapolis. This is his 19th consecutive year at Saint Mary's which he now considers his summer home.
