Position Responsibilities
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, with an undergraduate residential college of 1100 students in Winona, MN, seeks an innovative, dynamic individual for Assistant Vice President for Student Life. Reporting to and in collaboration with the Vice President for Mission and Student Life, this full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position provides strategic leadership and vision in the administration of a comprehensive range of services, policies, and procedures related to student affairs programming and planning. Specifically, this role plans and directs all college programs in the areas of the dean of students, campus safety, residence life, health services, and counseling services.
 
Job responsibilities include leading and guiding a team of four direct reports in the development and implementation of high-quality, student-centered approaches that support student success in non-academic dimensions of the student experience such as:
  • residential housing and residential life,
  • multicultural activities,
  • student activities and events,
  • student clubs and organizations,
  • student government,
  • freshman orientation,
  • outreach to prospective students,
  • student conduct,
  • personal counseling, and
  • health education and health care.
In addition, the role collaborates with functional leaders across the university such as college deans, faculty, university administration, athletic directors, and others, that further attainment of university-wide mission and goals. 
Essential Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate relates well with students, parents, faculty, and other academic professionals and possesses strong skills in collaboration and persuasion to establish, articulate and enforce expectations that foster a positive campus community. The person in this role must also demonstrate willingness and ability to support in words and actions the Lasallian Catholic heritage in higher education.
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
A master’s degree from an accredited institution is required, with a terminal degree preferred, in the area of student life, educational leadership, counseling, developmental psychology or related field. Relevant and progressive leadership experience in higher education administration, particularly at a faith-based institution, is strongly desired, as well as experience working with and understanding the developmental needs of college-age students in a 24/7 environment. Experience with or working knowledge of Title IX issues is also desired.
