Celebrating the past, present & future of science

On April 24 and 25, 2009, Saint Mary's University celebrated its strong history and proud tradition in the sciences. Alumni and friends of the university, as well as current science students, faculty and staff, learned about Saint Mary's vision for the future – creating a 21st Century Center for Science Education & Research on our Winona campus.

Friday, April 24

  Alumni Social: Gather with fellow SMU alumni, faculty from the science-related fields, science initiative task force and alumni board members.  Special guests include: Dr. Richard Kowles M'67, (Biology), Dr. Larry and Shirley Dieterman (Chemistry), Brother Jerome Rademacher '58 (Physics), Dr. Jim Vogel (Chemistry), Dr. Larry Luttmers (Psychology), and Dr. Don Alsum (Biology)

  Breakfast featuring a Science Initiative Presentation by Dr. Thomas Mans, vice president for academic affairs and Dr. Roger Kugel '70, professor and chair of chemistry and chair of the Science Initiative Task Force.
   
10 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Adducci Science Center
  Experience science facility tours, guest lecturers*, student/faculty research presentations & displays, demonstrations at Gilmore Creek, presentations from the GeoSpatial Services and the Resource Analysis graduate program.

  Dr. Richard Kowles, SMU professor emeritus of biology
  Amazing Maize: The many benefits derived from maize will be flaunted, not only because of agriculture, but also in manufacturing, genetic research, and numerous everyday uses.  A significant amount of discussion will be centered upon the role that SMU has played in understanding the genetics of the organism and its uses in future scientific endeavors.
