Admission & Costs

Students for whom a TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS score and a first-language barrier are present will be offered a place in the ELB Program if the following factors are present.

  • Student has a valid Visa to study in the United States, and
  • Student meets all Saint Mary’s admission criteria except TOEFL/MELAB/IELTS score, and
  • Student has one of the following English language proficiency scores: TOEFL score of 495-549 (paper based), or 167-212 (computer based), or 58-78 (internet based) or a MELAB score of 69-77, or an IELTS score of 5.5-6.5

Students not having a TOEFL/MELAB/IELTS score may be conditionally accepted.  Students will be tested on arrival at the university and placed in the appropriate program.  The TOEFL ITP is offered at the university.

Saint Mary's scholarship for international students

Scholarship Candidate Eligibility

  1. Complete the International Student Cultural Diversity Scholarship Application.
  2. Write an essay: “How will I promote my country and culture to the Saint Mary’s University community?
  3. Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school administrator.
  4. Submit a TOEFL score:

Unconditional Admission – 550/213/79 (PBT/CBT/IBT)
Conditional Admission – 495/167/58 (PBT/CBT/IBT)

Requirements for Recipients
In addition the student must:

  1. Have above-average grades from secondary school and illustrate outstanding leadership potential.
  2. Remain in good academic and disciplinary status.
  3. Participate/attend 10 SMU-sponsored events/activities per semester.
  4. Volunteer at least 10 hours per year working at or through the Center for International Students.
  5. Live on campus with an American roommate. 
  6. Bring a costume of traditional dress of your country.

Note: Recipients of this scholarship are not eligible for academic or any other SMU scholarships during their undergraduate career at Saint Mary’s University.  This scholarship is for undergraduate study on the Winona Campus only or for approved SMU study aboard programs.  The student must hold a valid F-1 Student Visa.
