Graduate Certificate: K-12 Reading Teacher

Have you ever asked yourself...

With the Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading you can...

  • Add the K-12 reading endorsement to a teaching license and be more marketable as a teacher

  • Help students who seem stuck in one place with their literacy skills

  • Support the literacy development of students who are English learners

  • Improve students’ foundational literacy skills while teaching content area courses

  • Earn a master's degree at the same time as earning the Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading
About the Program

The Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading program prepares candidates for Minnesota and/or Wisconsin (316) licensure as K-12 Reading Teachers. In addition to providing direct instruction to students, graduates of the program will be able to:

  • Match interventions in response to diagnostic assessments

  • Develop effective instruction to support struggling readers and English speakers of other languages

  • Foster literacy development in content area classes

  • Develop and supervise reading programs

This certificate can be completed as a stand-alone program or as part of the M.A. in Literacy Education. Candidates for the M.A. in Literacy Education degree will complete seven additional courses focusing on reading and writing development across the lifespan.  The Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading program is designed for currently licensed educators.

Because Saint Mary’s University recognizes the crucial role of language and literacy development for students who are learning English as another language; the Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading  program features four shared courses with the English as a Second Language certificate program. ESL and K-12 Reading Teacher candidates learn together as they explore language and literacy development for all students.

Delivery and schedule

The program is designed to fit the schedule of employed persons who want to take classes on weekends (mostly Saturdays) and during the summer months. Cohorts of 12-15 learners meet at off-site cohort locations across the state of Minnesota. The program can be completed at some locations as a “fast-track” model with more intensive coursework during the summer months or completed in the traditional format of 15 months. Learners in the program will experience mixed delivery formats: summer institutes, weekend workshops, and online/blended courses.
