Impetus for the Symposium
The impetus toward a renewed sense of Lasallian research has been manifested by the FSC General Chapters of 1993, 2000, and 2007. Five international colloquia on the topics of family, globalization, the megalopolis, technology, and evangelization were sponsored by the FSC Institute between 1993 and 2000. The present FSC Superior General, Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, has been persistent in his invitations to those in Lasallian higher education to provide research in certain key areas important to the Lasallian educational mission and heritage. The IALU 2008 Cuernavaca Conference for chief academic officers wrestled with the topic of Lasallian research, and research was a priority topic at both the IALU Presidents 2009 Encuentro IX in Philadelphia and the IALU Presidents 2012 Encuentro X in Manila. It has also been a topic of interest by participants throughout the five year history of the IALU Rome Leadership Conferences (2007-present). In addition, the office of Research and Resources for the Institute has encouraged a renewed emphasis on contemporary Lasallian Research.
