Visual Art Division
Keeping true to our founder’s original vision of encompassing both performing and visual arts in one’s overall arts education, MCA’s Visual Art division offering a variety of classes, workshops and multi-arts summer camps! Past and current offerings include: Carnival in the Snow, Create a Comic, Exploring Sculpture, Funtastic BookArts, Bookbinding — Two Sewn-Boards Bindings, Intro to Mosaic, Figure Drawing, Still Life Drawing, and the Winona Arts Camp. Workshops are held throughout the year for all ages in The Monet Room at MCA’s Valéncia Arts Center. Our Carnival in the Snow workshop was a part of the Winona Winter Carnival and was feature in the Winona Daily News.
Another important aspect of the Visual Arts Division at MCA is our gallery, Galleria Valéncia, at the Valéncia Arts Center (located down the long hallway that takes you to Studio 1 and the Karate Do Jo). Galleria Valéncia hosts visual art works from Winona area schools, Winona Area Homeschoolers, local organizations, professional artists, and student works from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and MCA in Throughout the year different exhibits delight all of the students, families, audience members and gallery visitors. Galleria Valencia is open during office hours as well as anytime classes or performances are in progress Monday- Sunday. Stop by and enjoy the featured talents of local artists.
Choose your own ARTventure
During these monthly visual arts workshops, young artists will have opportunity to build community and explore the visual arts in a unique way. Participants are invited to take a process-based approach to artistic discovery and skill building. Students will enhance their artistic decision making skills through a variety of materials such as: clay, watercolor, printmaking…… Each session will include an introduction to the elements of art and how they guide creative process. Art Lab is a place for kids to join a community of artists, let their imaginations take charge and to choose their own art-venture!
Day/Time: Saturdays, K-2nd grade (10-11am) & 3rd-5th grade (11:30am- 1pm)

Create a Comic Workshop
This workshop is in celebration of the holiday Free Comic Book Day (Always the first Saturday in May). During the workshop young artists will celebrate the art of comic books and learn about how to create their very own comic. Drawing comics is a great way to promote literacy skills and for kids to flex their creative muscles.
Day/Time: Saturday, May 7th, K-2nd grade (10-11am) & 3rd-5th grade (11:30am- 1pm)
Price: $15 (all supplies and snack included)

NEW! From Page to Stage
From majestic far-away places to the steps of a Broadway theatre, the written word will be used to ignite your creativity and imagination as you sculpt, act, dance, paint, sing, draw, and drum. Will you be inspired by Hobbits, Oz, an orphanage, or wardrobes? Friends and family will be invited on the last day for a visual and performing arts showcase. Students will be asked to bring a bagged lunch, snack and water bottle each day.
Dates: June 26 – June 30 (Monday- Friday)
Time: 9:00am- 3:00pm
Age: 2nd – 4th & 5th – 8th grade

Winona Arts Camp 2017: Improv Everywhere “Unexpected in the Arts”
Join MCA and Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) for the 3rd annual integrated arts summer camp. This year’s theme is “Improv Everywhere.” Get ready to think quick on your feet, flex your creative muscles and discover the joy of the unexpected in music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Families are invited to attend a lively showcase at 3pm on final day of camp.
Dates: August 7-11 (Monday- Friday)
Time: 9:00- 3:30 p.m.
Age: 2nd – 4th & 5th – 8th grade
Price: $175 (Early Bird Special), $199 (after May 31). Fee includes camp t-shirt, daily snack and admission to the MMAM. Students will need to bring a lunch and water bottle daily.
NEW! Super Artist Camp
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Super Camper! During this week long adventure campers will hone their creative super powers. Exploration in dance, theatre, music and visual arts to take their art to new heights. Families are invited to an open house at 10:15am on the last day of camp.
Dates: August 14-18 (Monday- Friday)
Time: 9:30 – 10:45am
Age: 3-5 years & K-1st grade (students must be potty-trained)
Price: $49 (Early Bird Special), $59 (after May 1)
MCA hosts visual art works from Winona area schools, local professional artists, and student work from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and MCA in Galleria Valéncia, at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 West 10th Street, Winona. Throughout the academic year different schools and organizations display works of their student artists. Galleria Valencia is open during the center’s office hours and when programming is in session. Stop by and enjoy the featured talents of local youth artists.
