Music for Little Movers

You and your child will squeal with delight as you wiggle and spin with Amanda to both original and favorite preschool songs. This class will explore new topics each week including colors, animals, and seasons. It is designed to develop your child’s motor skills, tickle their ears and create a fun memories.

BEGINNING ROCK GUITAR CLASS

Learning rock guitar can be lots of fun and very challenging.  This class shows you the fundamentals of guitar as well as some basic rock techniques.  Geared for the absolute beginner, seasoned players are also welcome to join in and get a fresh perspective on the instrument. We’ll present the fundamentals of  strumming, chord vocabulary,  rhythm, tone, and other elements of rock music. Open to both electric and acoustic players.

Dates: Thursdays, July 20 thru August 24.

Time: 5:30-6:30 pm

Age: 5th grade to adult

ROCK AND BLUES GUITAR TECHNIQUES.

This class is geared for students who have a little bit of guitar experience and want to explore the fundamentals of  Rock guitar.  This class shows you five power chords, blues scales, lead guitar solo techniques and so much more.  We’ll also learn some vintage rock guitar songs that musicians have traditionally used to hone their chops with. Open to both electric and acoustic guitarists.We’ll have fun learning how to jam!

Each summer MCA offers a wide variety of multi-arts camps including the Winona Arts Camp done in collaboration with the Minnesota Marine Art Museum to Songwriting to Summer Dance Intensives. We have camps for ages 3 and up.

NEW! From Page to Stage

From majestic far-away places to the steps of a Broadway theatre, the written word will be used to ignite your creativity and imagination as you sculpt, act, dance, paint, sing, draw, and drum. Will you be inspired by Hobbits, Oz, an orphanage, or wardrobes? Friends and family will be invited on the last day for a visual and performing arts showcase. Students will be asked to bring a bagged lunch, snack and water bottle each day.

Dates: June 26 – June 30 (Monday- Friday)

Winona Arts Camp 2017:  Improv Everywhere “Unexpected in the Arts”

Join MCA and Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) for the 3rd annual integrated arts summer camp. This year’s theme is “Improv Everywhere.” Get ready to think quick on your feet, flex your creative muscles and discover the joy of the unexpected in music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Families are invited to attend a lively showcase at 3pm on final day of camp.

Dates: August 7-11 (Monday- Friday)

Time: 9:00- 3:30 p.m.

Age: 2nd – 4th & 5th – 8th grade

Price: $175 (Early Bird Special), $199 (after May 31). Fee includes camp t-shirt, daily snack and admission to the MMAM.  Students will need to bring a lunch and water bottle daily.

NEW! Super Artist Camp

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Super Camper!  During this week long adventure campers will hone their creative super powers. Exploration in dance, theatre, music and visual arts to take their art to new heights. Families are invited to an open house at 10:15am on the last day of camp.

Dates: August 14-18 (Monday- Friday)

Time: 9:30 – 10:45am

Age: 3-5 years & K-1st grade (students must be potty-trained)

Robin Hood

Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre is back! Students aged 7-18 will be cast in the original musical production of “Robin Hood”. Any student registered will be cast in this week-long production. All cast members are required to participate in the audition process on April 23rd to determine their role. Cast members MUST be available for rehearsals Monday- Friday, 4pm-8:15pm and performances on Friday April 28th at 7pm and Saturday, April 29th at 2pm. Performances are in MCA’s Academy Theatre at the Valencia Arts Center.

Jazz combos help students learn the art of jazz in a small ensemble setting.  The Jazz Combo session will provide basic instruction in jazz-related rhythm, tone, style, concept, listening skills, and improvisation.  The ultimate goal of these ensembles is to give interested students the opportunity to study and perform jazz ensemble literature. The combos will pay at a variety community performances, TBA All musicians and instruments are welcome, but space is limited. Click here for more info about the Jazz Combos.

Parents!  Come learn how to teach your little one the guitar and have fun doing it.  Geared for parents with children ages 4-6 years old, The Suzuki Guitar Method is based on the way a child acquires language.  Besides instilling the gift of music, it is also an opportunity to bond with your child while teaching socialization skills, patience, persistence, community, respect, problem solving, and joyful participation.  Our instructor, Kerry Klungtvedt,  is a nationally registered Suzuki Teacher with many years of experience. This program is comprised of a mix of parent only, parent & child, group and private lessons. For this exciting pilot program participation is very limited but guitars will be issued to both parents and children to use throughout the program. For more information about how to apply to participate and to learn about the Suzuki Method come to an info session during the open house.

We’ll present the fundamentals of  strumming, chord vocabulary, reading music, rhythm, tone, and other elements of music for both group activities and solo playing.  A variety of styles, songs, and even instruments will be explored.  So, pick up your guitar and join us. We’ll use the “Complete Hal Leonard Guitar Method” by Will Schmid and Greg Koch as our main text.  See you in class!
