Interfaith understanding promoted by Kaplan Foundation
For the seventh time, Saint Mary’s and the community have been enriched by an original composition and world-premiere performance sponsored by the Helen and Sam Kaplan Foundation. The Kaplan Foundation supports performances and activities led by Jewish artists and scholars that are designed to increase cultural and religious understanding at Saint Mary’s. On Saturday afternoon of Family Weekend, the Concert Band debuted “Katanya,” a Jewish oral folk tale written by Larry Bitenski of Centre College in Kentucky. The composer also served as on-stage narrator for this variation on a familiar children’s story, while the band, directed by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, performed a musical piece including Jewish folk songs from the composer’s youth.
