Students are out in force to make a difference in Winona
Part of our transformational residential campus experience is engaging our students with the City of Winona, so that they understand and value the importance of being a good citizen and good neighbor. In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day” last Saturday, our Volunteer Mentors group in partnership with Campus Ministry invited Winona residents and nonprofit agencies to submit requests for service. About 150 students fanned out to dozens of sites around the area, lending a helping hand with painting, yard work and other projects as members of the larger community.
“Make a Difference Day” is a national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturdayof every October. For the sixth year, SMU was proud to join the millions of people throughout the nation who participated in community-building projects.
