MBA students studying in the Philippines

A group of students in the MBA program are currently undertaking a “real-world” consulting project — in the Philippines.

You read correctly, the Philippines!

Seven MBA students and Associate Professor K. David Hirshey are currently in Manila engaging in the field-study portion of their MBA Capstone experience.

“It has been amazing and very much an eye opener to how business is conducted in other parts of the world! I’m am so happy I was able to be part of this international field study,” said Jackie Mahon, one of the MBA students engaged in the two-week study trip in Manila.

The students are working with two client companies, UnionBank and Ramesh Trading Company. The class will also be in dialogue with the graduate school business faculty and students at De La Salle University-Manila.

This course, MBA 669: Strategic Management Capstone, is unique to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and has taken students from Minnesota to other parts of the world to learn since 2006. The international capstone has brought MBA students to work in Finland, Sweden, China, Thailand, Kenya, Greece, Costa Rica and Colombia.

Offered twice a year, the class combines a theoretical exploration of the role of strategic management for an organization with a “real-world” consulting project. In the fall, the class works with clients outside of the United States. In the spring, the class works with businesses or not-for-profits in Minnesota, usually in the Twin Cities.

This is the second time Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota has worked with another Lasallian university to deliver the capstone. In the fall of 2011, an MBA group studied/consulted in La Salle Barcelona.

The group currently abroad returns Nov. 11, 2013. (Editor’s Note: Everyone returned home safely and unaffected by the typhoon that struck the island on Nov. 9.)
