Alumni in action — Michael Johanns, U.S. Senator
Little did Michael Johanns know when he and his mother met with Saint Mary’s admission counselor, Brother Anthony, in 1967 that he would one day serve in the United States Senate.
After graduating from Saint Mary’s with a degree in communication, he attended law school at Creighton University and then practiced law in Lincoln and O’Neill, Neb. In 1991 he was elected mayor of Lincoln and in 1998 he was elected the 38th governor for the State of Nebraska.
President George W. Bush named then-Governor Johanns the United States Secretary of Agriculture in 2005, a cabinet position he held until he decided to run for the open senate seat in Nebraska in 2007. Today Senator Johanns serves on the committees for Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Veterans’ Affairs; Indian Affairs; and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
