Alumni in action — Mary Fossum Blair, Captain-USMC

Mary Fossum Blair ’00 graduated from Saint Mary’s with a degree in writing and publishing. Prior to joining the United States Marine Corps, Blair was a high school administrator in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Prescott, Ariz. She currently serves as an investigator in the Assistance and Investigations Division of the Inspector General of the Marine Corps.

Fossum Blair processes assistance cases in order to address complaints involving issues of fraud, waste, abuse, or mismanagement. She also provides oversight and guidance to 47 subordinate Command Inspector General offices on inquiries and investigations.

Fossum Blair served as regimental adjutant and legal officer for 16 months before deploying to Helmand Province, Afghanistan from September 2009 to April 2010. While deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, she served as the battalion adjutant and legal officer. In this role, she was responsible for accountability of personnel, awards processing, casualty reporting, and coordinating administrative legal matters. She also served as officer in charge and team leader for Female Engagement Team (FET) missions, meeting with over 200 local Afghan women in support of combat operations.

Upon return from deployment, Fossum Blair resumed work as regimental adjutant for CLR-17 until joining the Office of the Inspector General of the Marine Corps in August 2010.
