Cineclub showing films in Spanish and Portuguese
Cineclub, provides an opportunity for the Saint Mary’s and Winona communities to enjoy some films in Spanish and Portuguese that may not typically be shown in local theaters. All films will have English subtitles. In addition to viewing the films, participants will be invited to exchange ideas related to the films and their underlying socio-cultural contexts.
Feb. 24: El niño pez (The Fish Child), a crime/drama/thriller from Argentina. Director: Lucía Puenzo. A desperate love story between two young girls of extremely different social backgrounds who, unable to find a place for their love in the world they live in, are pushed to commit a crime.
March 3: Spring Recess – no film showing
March 10: The Take (Argentina/Canada, 2004). Director: Naomi Klein. In suburban Buenos Aires, 30 unemployed autoparts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to restart the silent machines. (IMDb). Documentary.
March 24: Bolivia (Argentina, 2001). Director: Adrián Caetano. A Bolivian immigrant working illegally as a cook in a small restaurant in Buenos Aires suffers abuse and discrimination from its customers. (IMDb). Stars: Freddy Flores, Rosa Sánchez. Drama.
April 7: Un cuento chino (A Chinese Tale) (Argentina, 2011). Director: Sebastián Borensztein. In Buenos Aires, the bitter and methodic Roberto is a lonely man and the owner of a hardware store. One day, Roberto sees a Chinese named Jun being expelled from a taxi while he is watching the landing of airplanes in the airport (IMDb). Stars. Ricardo Darín. Comedy.
