Brother Charles Severin Celebration of Excellence Gala

Anticipation is building for the first Brother Charles Severin Celebration of Excellence Gala. On May 17, alumni and friends of Saint Mary’s University will gather in Chicago to celebrate the university’s long legacy of excellence in the sciences.

Brother Charles Severin started teaching ecology at Saint Mary’s in 1934, using the river bottom, bluffs and trout streams of the area as his laboratory. Nearly six decades of learners benefited from his pioneering teaching methods, knowledge and dedication. It is fitting that this event — dedicated to advancing the sciences at Saint Mary’s — bears his name.

Saint Mary’s University is building on its rich history of scientific inquiry, stature and achievement to achieve a vision of excellence in the sciences for the students of tomorrow. Science programming is ever-evolving and branching into multidisciplinary areas of study. Saint Mary’s takes advantage of partnerships with the world-class health service organizations near our campuses, and students are blessed to live and learn in a vast and diverse natural environment that provides unparalleled experiential educational opportunities.

More than 300 Saint Mary’s and College of Saint Teresa alumni, parents and friends are expected to attend the event. The evening begins with Mass at Saint Peter’s Church, followed by a special dinner and program at the Union League Club. Select current science students will make presentations, and an honorary degree will be presented to Tom Skilling, chief meteorologist for WGN-TV, for his significant contributions to the sciences. The President’s Medal for Outstanding Merit will be awarded to Dr. Robert Dolehide ’47, an esteemed medical doctor who practiced in the Chicago area for more than 50 years. Additionally, talented Saint Mary’s student and faculty musicians will perform.

Join Saint Mary’s University in preparing today’s science leaders for the challenges of tomorrow’s world. A complete schedule and online registration are available at Celebration of Excellence.

  1. MD Hanson says:

He was a remarkable man and an even better teacher. He was never easy and you prepared for class. He understood science and how it was woven into life. He was a teacher at heart who made you think.
