Student Success Center offers 5 services in 1 location

The Student Success Center at the Winona campus brings together a host of helpful student services under one umbrella. The one-stop academic shop offers advising, disability support services, career services and internships, tutoring, and the writing center.

Students are encouraged to make use of the center’s services throughout their four-year college career, as well as in preparation for their lives after college. Here are some quick overviews of the six services offered.

Advising
This office helps students reach their academic potential and succeed on their academic journey. The office works closely with faculty advisors, the tutoring program, the Writing Center, the Wellness Center, Career Services and Internships, the Athletic Department, and Disability Support Services to provide a comprehensive advising experience for students.

Assists with:

  • Scheduling courses
  • Declaring a major
  • Evaluating completion of general education or major requirements
  • Academic success strategies

Disability Support Services
This office provides specific accommodations to qualified students and is based on individual student documentation. Students are responsible for furnishing documentation of their disability and requesting reasonable accommodations.

Assists with:

  • Alternate format textbooks
  • Assistive technology
  • Peer note-takers
  • Testing accommodations
  • Liaison with the faculty as needed

Career Services and Internships
This office helps students develop a general perspective of life/work planning, as well as evaluate and effectively implement job search strategies. The internship and field exploration programs provide students with carefully designed work experiences to explore personal aptitudes, abilities, and interests in relation to their career choices.  Employer services include on-campus recruiting, interviewing, information sessions, job and internship posting services, and fairs.

  • Information about internships and field exploration and jobs
  • Job search preparation (including interview skills, résumé and cover letter advice)
  • Networking with alumni

Tutoring
Free tutoring is available in most subjects including humanities, mathematics, business, behavioral science, and natural science courses. Tutoring increases academic performance by providing students an opportunity to practice what is learned in class — at their own pace. Peer tutors recommended by faculty are trained to assist in development and managing student learning and study strategies.

Writing Center
This office provides individualized instruction at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming initial ideas to proofing a final draft. Writing Center staff can also assist with writing unrelated to coursework, such as résumés, cover letters and graduate school applications.
