Saint Mary’s music groups return from tour of Ireland

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Singers and Saint Mary’s Jazz Combo 1 have returned from a week-long concert tour of Ireland. The octet sounds of Saint Mary’s Jazz Combo 1—under the direction of A. Eric Heukeshoven—were heard at “The Vault” in the Castle Hotel in Dublin; at Galway’s premier jazz club, Busker Brownes; and at the Kerry School of Music in Tralee. The hometown audience is invited to catch the combo at their free homecoming concert on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Figliulo Recital Hall. The 26-voice Chamber Singers select ensemble is directed by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, associate professor of music. Highlights of their tour performances included: University College Dublin (with UCD Philharmonic Choir); Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Cashel, County Tipperary; St. Nicholas Collegiate Church, Galway; and St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, County Kerry. The concerts featured the Irish premiere performances of “Introit,” a setting of text from the Divine Liturgy of St. James by Dr. O’Shea. Two Saint Mary’s students selected for SAI scholarships

WINONA, Minn. — Two seniors in the Saint Mary’s University Music Department, Katie Stein and Kelsey Engesser, were recently selected as this year’s Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) Alumni Scholarship recipients. The Twin Cities SAI Alumni Chapter awards two scholarships through a competitive process to deserving SAI members in the Minnesota/Wisconsin region. Stein, who plays flute, plans to attend Augsburg College for a Master’s licensure program in Music Therapy; Engesser, who plays clarinet, will be continuing at Saint Mary’s in the Master’s of Art in Instruction program for Music Education next year. Saint Mary’s Jazz Combo to tour Ireland

Local performance is March 11 WINONA, Minn. — The octet sounds of Saint Mary’s Jazz Combo 1 will be heard in a series of performances across Ireland during the university’s spring break week. Tour selections include an exciting set of new arrangements in the West Coast “Cool” style as well as favorite jazz standards from swing to jazz-fusion. Members of the touring ensemble include: Destiny Dux, alto sax; Nick Novotny, tenor sax; Jaci Bongard, baritone sax; Riley Frost, trumpet; Tim Ellis, drums; and Paul Schmitt, bass. Rounding out the group are Camden Webster (2014 Music Industry graduate) on guitar and director A. Eric Heukeshoven on trombone. Chicago jazz fans will have a chance to preview selections at an alumni reception on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Hilton Garden Inn – O’Hare beginning at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, March 2, the combo will give their first Ireland performance at “The Vault” in the Castle Hotel in Dublin. Tour performances will include the following liturgies and concerts: St. Francis Xavier Parish, La Grange, Ill.,  Saturday, Feb. 28, Mass University College Dublin (with UCD Philharmonic Choir),Tuesday, March 3, visit /workshop Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Cashel, County Tipperary, Wednesday, March 4, concert St. Nicholas Collegiate Church, Galway, Thursday, March 5, concert St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, County Kerry, Sunday, March 8, prelude concert and Mass All concerts are free and open to the public, and guests are welcome at the various liturgies. MCA’s jazz combos to present local gigs

WINONA, Minn. — Led by local band director extraordinaire Dave Gudmastad, Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts’ three jazz combos will perform all over town. These unique combos, comprised of students ages 12 to 16, will bring the sweet sounds of jazz music to life on Sunday, March 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wellington’s Pub & Grill (1429 West Service Dr.); Sunday, March 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jefferson’s Pub & Grill (58 Center St.); and Monday March 23, at 7 p.m. at Figliulo Recital Hall (700 Terrace Heights). All of these performances are free and open to the public. MCA offers programming in dance, music, visual art, and theatre year-round. Saint Mary’s welcomes guest musician Norman Lee

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University’s Department of Music will welcome guest musician Norman Lee, a Steinway artist, for a special performance Sunday, Feb. 22. Lee is a performer, piano teacher, and music educator who currently teaches at the Baptist University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Kingston University of London, and the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Born in Hong Kong, Lee started his piano studies at a very young age. Awarded the Sklarevski Scholarship, he furthered his piano studies in the Peabody Conservatory of Music with Walter Hautzig and Robert Weirich. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Figliulo Recital Hall, located in the Performance Center.
