Ed.S. Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction

The Education Specialist degree in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction provides professionals with the opportunity to both expand their expertise and enhance the way they provide leadership for their school, district and/or organization in the areas of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. This 60 credit degree builds upon the academic work completed in the master’s program.  Potential students must possess a master’s degree in an education-related field.

The program is designed with a dual emphasis.  The first emphasis is on the aspects and integration of curriculum, assessment, and instruction.  The second emphasis develops within learners the collaborative and leadership skills for educational settings as well as the emotional resiliency necessary to meet the new demands and new realities for improved student learning.

The Specialist program is articulated with the Doctor of Education in Leadership Program.  Those students who wish to pursue a doctorate upon completion of this specialist program will have earned 27 credits toward that degree.

Program Outcomes
Graduates of the Education Specialist in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction program are expected to be able to:
  1. Analyze and synthesize research data and research-based practices to design and implement systems that promote student achievement.
  2. Provide leadership to create a productive educational community.
  3. Integrate the historical, theoretical, legal and political foundations to influence curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
  4. Create inclusive experiences and environments by encouraging divergent ideas and engaging diverse communities to achieve educational goals for all learners.
  5. Use ethical principles to guide and direct decisions and actions.
  6. Implement developmentally appropriate practices by integrating curricular, assessment, and instructional theories, models, and technologies that meet the needs of the wide range of student populations.
  7. Use the skills and knowledge of emotional competence to achieve individual and organizational resiliency.
  8. Design professional development opportunities and support systems that will invite and sustain continuous, lifelong learning for oneself and for members of the educational community.
  9. Communicate effectively in a variety of modes.
Program Delivery
The Education Specialist in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction program is presented in a format to meet the needs of working adults. Classes are scheduled primarily on weekends.  Several semesters’ courses are integrated so as to blend content with application. Faculty members focus on the application of research and advanced communication skills needed in schools to create and maintain effective curriculum, assessment and instructional systems designed to meet the elevated levels of accountability in contemporary education.

Program Structure
The Education Specialist in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction program consists of 60 semester credits of course work.

As many as 21 semester credits may be taken from an education-related master’s degree provided the credits are related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction.  The program coordinator will review the master’s transcript to determine what credits, if any, will count towards the Education Specialist in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction.  Any credit not counted toward the 21 semester credits must be made up at the master’s and/or post-master’s levels.
