Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is dedicated to advancing the educational and career goals of today’s students. Founded in 1912 by Bishop Patrick R. In 2007-08, 1,350 undergraduate students (1,299 full-time) are enrolled at the Winona campus. Students come from Minnesota (61%), Illinois (16%), Wisconsin (12%) and 27 other U.S. states and 12 foreign countries. The 57 undergraduate majors are divided into the School of Humanities and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of the Arts, and the School of Education. Saint Mary’s also offers special undergraduate academic opportunities including the Lasallian Honors Program, individualized major study programs, cooperative professional programs, off-campus internships and programs for study abroad in London and Florence. The De La Salle Language Institute offers courses in English as a Second Language and cultural immersion to international students. At the Twin Cities campus, the English Language Academy helps undergraduate students learn English so they can continue their education successfully; participants can also earn up to 30 credits toward a bachelor’s completion degree at Saint Mary’s. |
Undergraduates participate in student government, the arts (choir, band, instrumental ensembles, theatre, art shows), sororities, fraternities, clubs, community volunteer programs, newsletter and newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, dance team, and radio station. An active campus ministry embraces and serves all members of the community regardless of faith commitment. There are 21 NCAA Div. III intercollegiate teams plus intramural sports. These include men’s varsity baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, hockey, soccer, swimming/diving, tennis, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. Women’s varsity sports include basketball, cross-country, golf, hockey, soccer, softball, swimming/diving, tennis, volleyball, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. The cross-country team practices and races on the university’s 14 km. course. Rugby, paintball, skiing and snowboarding, dance team, water polo and lacrosse are club sports.

Saint Mary’s enrolls nearly 4,600 adult learners in 50 degree and certificate programs in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs. An additional 200 students attend classes at SMU’s Nairobi campus. Master degree and certificate programs and the Ed.D. program are offered from the Winona campus. Bachelor completion, master degree , certificate and educational specialist degree programs, and the Ed.D. program are offered at SMU's Twin Cities campus, Apple Valley and Rochester centers. Programs are also offered through Nairobi, Kenya, and at approximately 100 off-campus sites across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Winona undergraduate College
In the undergraduate programs, the university employs 94 full-time faculty (79 with terminal degrees and 58 with tenure) and 40 part-time faculty, resulting in a student-faculty ratio of about 12:1.

Saint Mary’s is a good academic value; it is one of the least expensive schools of the 17 Minnesota Private College Council members. In 2007-08, the new-student tuition and fees are $22,398; room and board is $6,130, for a total cost of $28,528. The application fee is $25 (free online). Books and other personal expenses are additional. (The per-semester cost for the De La Salle Language Institute, including room, board, tuition and special fees, is $8,858 for 2007-08. About 80% of all undergraduates receive close to $21 million in financial aid. About $8.3 million is provided by Saint Mary’s as need-based or merit scholarships, and grants. The remainder is federal or state aid, loans, and work-study. Prestigious Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarships are available for students who show leadership potential and high moral standards. The Saint Luke and Saint Cecilia scholarships are based on art and music excellence, and the Dorothy B. Magnus Scholarship and Lillian Davis Hogan Scholarship are for outstanding theatre majors.
