How to Apply
Graduate Students

Step 1: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

  • Apply for Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov
  • Complete FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Federal School Code: 002380
Step 2: Receive Student Aid Report (SAR)
  • Review SAR for incorrect information, missing information or a request for additional documentation
  • Make corrections at www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • If additional documentation is required, submit documentation to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Financial Aid Office 2500 Park Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55404

Step 3: Verify eligibility to receive federal student aid

  • Be a fully, admitted degree seeking student at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota
  • Be registered as a half-time student; typically defined as 4 graduate credits at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota

Step 4: Receive Award Letter from Financial Aid Office

  • 6-8 weeks after completed FAFSA has been received and student is fully admitted and registered as a half-time student, a financial aid award packet will be created
  • The financial aid award will be comprised of Federal Stafford Loans
  • Review the financial aid award letter and determine how much to borrow
  • Complete the Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note which can be found on our webpage at www.smumn.edu/tcfinancialaid
  • Return the required paperwork to: Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Financial Aid Office 2500 Park Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55404

Step 5: Disbursement of Financial Aid

  • Loans will be applied to students Saint Mary’s of Minnesota University of Minnesota tuition account within 10 days or the scheduled 1st semester disbursement date upon receipt of all required documentation
  • One semester only loans will be subject to multiple disbursements
  • After tuition has been paid, any excess funds will be returned to the student by the Business Office within 10 business days


Additional Documentation Required by FAFSA

If the Parent and /or Student Signature is missing:
When you filed your FAFSA, you and/or at least one parent did not sign and date the signature page of the FAFSA. In order to complete the FAFSA, both you and your parent (s) must sign and date your Student Aid Report. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and click on “Provide Electronic Signature” and follow the directions.

If you have been flagged for Verification of your Citizenship:
When you applied for federal student aid, the federal government was not able to confirm your citizenship status and we are now required to obtain documentation from you to confirm. Please send us a copy of your US Birth Certificate, US Passport, Certificate of Citizenship from the DHS or Certificate of Naturalization from the DHS.

If you have been flagged for Verification of Permanent Residency or Eligible Non-Citizen Status:
When you applied for federal student aid, the federal government was not able to confirm your claim of permanent residency or eligible non-citizen status and we are now required to obtain documentation from you to confirm. Please send us a photocopy of the back and front of your Permanent Resident Card, your passport if stamped as valid for I-1551, or your I-94 Departure Record if stamped as valid for I-1551 or as a refugee of if granted asylum.

If you have been flagged for Verification of Selective Service Status:
When you applied for federal student aid, the federal government was not able to confirm that you are registered with the Selective Service and we are now required to obtain documentation from you to confirm.  Please send us a photocopy of the front and back of your Selective Service Registration Acknowledgement.  If you believe that you have already registered or are exempt, please contact Selective Service at 847-688-6888 to obtain the required documentation. Please send us a photocopy of the front and back of the documentation. You may also register or obtain documentation through the Selective Service web site at www.sss.gov.

If you have been flagged for Verification of Social Security Number:
When you applied for federal student aid, the federal government was not able to confirm that the Name, Social Security number and Date of Birth you listed were correct. We are now required to obtain documentation from you to confirm. Please send us a photocopy of the front and back of your social security card. You may obtain more information at the Social Security Administration web site at www.ssa.gov.

If you have been selected for Federal Verification:
Your FAFSA has been selected at random for verification by the Department of Education. You should receive a request for documentation from our office shortly. If you have not received such a letter, please contact our office immediately.
