Literature Major (41 credits): The literature major offers students a comprehensive study of British, American, other literatures written in English, and literatures in translation and provides students with the opportunity to develop their writing skills. In addition to completing coursework in the literatures just mentioned, students study major authors, themes, and genres in depth through various upper-division courses and seminars. Students are encouraged to take part in SMU’s London semester, preferably during their junior or senior year and to study a foreign language. The literature major prepares students for any job or profession that requires the skills of critical reading and analysis. It is also an excellent preparation for graduate or professional programs in English, law, journalism, and business.
