The Master of Science in Geographic Information Sciences degree offers areas of focus in natural resource management, homeland security/emergency management, business administration, policy administration/criminal justice and project management. All degree studies are premised on the concept that effective resource managers, whatever their specialty orientation, will need now and in the future, GIS technological expertise, disciplinary excellence and effective communication skills.
Our curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in these areas to help them become competent, confident decision-makers. Emphasis is placed on spatial data analysis and computer mapping. Students will receive 'hands-on' training in variety of GIS fields. This unique approach allows learners to meet and network with a diversity of working professionals and to advance rapidly in their professional careers.
The MSGIS degree is designed to foster technical competence supported with theory and concepts. Learners will become experienced in spatial analysis by immersion in spatial studies. Here they will use the Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) suite of software among others. Learners will also gain additional technical competence in a disciplinary field (natural resource management, homeland security/emergency management, business, policy administration/criminal justice and/or project management). Finally, learners learn how to be effective communicators as well as acquire foundational knowledge in grant/contract proposal solicitation, writing and review.
The curriculum for this program is flexible with staff assistance in individual curriculum design. The amount of time each learner will need to complete the program will vary. The exceptionally prepared learner, enrolling full-time and being able to allow credit for prior experience and learning, can reduce the time needed to complete the program by up to seven credits. Others, for whom additional coursework is recommended, who choose to take a greater number of electives or who enroll on a part-time basis will require more time. Learners who choose the ‘fast track’ can complete degree and GIS certificate requirements in 12 months. Learners who elect the 24 month ‘traditional track’ will typically require six semesters of study over two years..
Three Tracks of Study
The traditional program (24 month) of study (Winona Campus) requires six semesters (fall, spring and summer) of study. Coursework studies are most intense during the fall and spring semesters. Less coursework during the summer to affords learners more opportunity to work and/or focus on research with target completion at the end of the second summer semester.
The “Fast-Track” (12 month) option (Winona Campus)allows learners the opportunity to complete their degree studies in one year! The “Fast-Track” provides an intense, hands-on learning environment that allows the learner to focus on the curriculum for one year, and then enter the workforce immediately following.
The flexible track option (Twin Cities Campus)allows learners the opportunity to personalized programs and complete their degree studies on a part time basis while working. Courses are primarily offered in the evenings. Learners typically pursue curricular studies at a pace that is complimentary to their personal and professional lives.
