Prospective Students
Do Bring...

A mini first aid kit with:

  • band aids (small and large)
  • antibiotic ointment
  • a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • a thermometer
  • a four inch ace wrap if you are athletic
  • sunscreen
  • mosquito repellant
  • several sterile gauze pads and bandage tape
  • a heating pad

Prescription Medication:

If you require medication on a regular basis:

  • Bring enough of your medication with you for the first month.
  • Make arrangements to have the prescription electronically transferred to a local Winona Pharmacy. Winona has several major chains including Shopko, K-mart, and Target.
If you have a medication that cannot be electronically transferred, have your physician write you a new prescription, which you can take to a local pharmacy once you are settled in on campus.
  • Have a written list of the medication you take and why among your personal items and be sure you have supplied a similar list to Student Health.

Don't Bring...

Antibiotics

Unless you are on a daily antibiotic (such as for acne), DO NOT BRING ANY WITH YOU.  We often find students who come with leftover medication from a prior illness in case they feel ill.  This is dangerous as these medications are often used inappropriately and can aggravate a condition, mask a test (such as a strep screen), or create resistant bacteria strains.

Someone Else's Medication

If the medication is not prescribed for you, you should not have it with you.  If you have a medical condition that requires a specific medication, see your health care provider and have him/her write a prescription for you.  This ensures better health care and accurate medication   and treatment for your condition.

A Belief You Have To "Tough It Out"

This is both an exciting and scary time as you explore new horizons. There is no question too silly or small.  If you have a question about your health, call us.  If we don't have the answer for you, we'll help you find it.

Required Immunizations

All students attending Saint Mary's are required to present the month and year of certain immunizations. Students are expected to be current on these immunizations and provide this information on their health forms prior to the start of their first semester. Failure to provide the appropriate information by the start of the first semester on campus will result in a student being unable to attend classes or register for second semester classes. Requirements are as follows:

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

  • First dose at age 12 - 15 months or later;
  • Second dose at age 4-6 years or later.
  • Students born before 1956 are not required to provide MMR dates.

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis

  • Primary series (Dtap or DTP) in childhood

Booster (Td) at age 11 or 12 and every ten years after.

  • Students will be expected to come to school with a current date. If a booster is necessary before graduation from college, the student will have the option of receiving one in Student Health for a nominal fee.
  • Current Td dates are required regardless of the year of birth.

Polio Vaccine

  • Primary series in childhood
  • Boosters after the age of 18 are currently only recommended for travel to certain parts of the world.

Students who, due to personal beliefs, have a conscientious objection to immunization OR have a medical reason which prohibits them from obtaining any or all of these vaccines, will not be required to be current. HOWEVER, a notarized statement to this effect is required. In the case of a medical exemption, a physician's statement is required. Forms for either situation are available by contacting Student Health at 507-457-1492 or by email at aweisbro@smumn.edu.

Health Insurance

Mandatory Health Insurance Requirements for Prospective Students

All international students and full-time undergraduate are required to have health insurance. To assist those without insurance, the university has made a health insurance plan available. If you are covered under a health insurance plan comparable to the university's plan, you may opt out of the plan offered by the university. To do so, you must complete an insurance enrollment/waiver form AND provide a copy of your insurance card. If the completed form and a copy of the insurance card are not returned by the deadline, you will automatically be enrolled in the health insurance plan available through the university and your student account will be billed.

While a copy of the insurance policy and the enrollment/waiver form will be mailed to your home address in early July, you may also download the enrollment/waiver form. Please complete the waiver form on line and mail a copy of your insurance card to Student Health.

Deadline for completing waiver in order to avoid charge for insurance is August 15, 2007.

Part-time undergraduate and graduate students may enroll on a voluntary basis but must pay the fee directly to the insurance company.

Costs:

Basic plan: $1030.00 for 12 months coverage

Athletic coverage:  $1330.00  ($895.00 for basic plan plus $300.00 for athletic coverage)

* Additional provisions for students needing coverage between August 15 and September 1 are available for an additional fee.  Please see enrollment process below for additional information.

If you experience any difficulty using the waiver or enrollment links, please contact:

Student Physicals

Who Needs A Physical?

Saint Mary’s University does not require that all students have a physical.  Physicals are required under the following conditions:

Athletes

Any student anticipating in Inter-collegiate athletics must have undergone a recent (within three months) physical exam prior to the beginning of fall semester.

Your health care provider should complete page two of the health form.  This form should be turned into the Student Health Office.  Please DO NOT turn it in to your coach, the trainer or anyone else on campus.  Doing so could result in you being unable to start your sport.

Chronic Health Problems

Any student with a chronic health problems such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, mental health conditions, or physical disabilities, etc. are expected to have a physical within three to six months prior to the start of his/her first semester at Saint Mary’s.  In addition, the physician should supply additional information regarding treatment, medication or other special needs as is warranted for continued care while at school.

Other

The university may request a student complete a physical or provide appropriate medical documentation in the event of concern about a stated or suspected health condition.

Where to Obtain a Physical

Ideally your physical should be completed by the your primary provider.  In the event this is not possible, Student Health Services will be happy to assist the student in obtaining an appointment in Winona.  No physicals are done on campus.  Any costs incurred related to obtaining a physical, are the responsibility of the student.

If You Need Another Health Form

While our office is closed during the summer, messages will be picked up once a week.  You can call (507) 457-1492 and request a new form be mailed to you.  You can also contact the Office of Admission (507-457-1700) and request a form be sent to you.
