PASS Program
Overview

The Path to Academic Success (PASS) is a year-long program designed to help students with diverse levels of academic preparation develop the skills and competencies they need to succeed at the college level. The program mission is rooted in the Lasallian charism of the Christian Brothers. Components of the PASS program include periodic academic progress reports, skill-building courses, regular consultation with the program director regarding academic and personal concerns, tutorial assistance, and the opportunity to participate in several personal development workshops.

The goal of the Path to Academic Success program is to help students take responsibility for their own unique academic needs through self-monitoring and by accessing the academic support available on campus.

A Message From the Director

Welcome!

My name is Ken McCullough, and I am director of the PASS program. This is my third year in this position, though I was involved in related work at the University of Iowa for twelve years. It is our goal for PASS students to experience a successful transition to college life; accordingly, we will work actively and creatively with them, their parents, with professors here at the university, and with other appropriate offices on campus in their behalf. It is my intention to serve as an advocate for PASS students; while Saint Mary’s employs me, I am really working for the students. Part of that work is to make sure students channel their newfound independence in the right directions. I am pretty good at listening, and will listen to what they tell me—I’ll be more of an uncle than a surrogate parent--I won’t spoil them—I’ll tell it like it is. I don’t pretend to have all the answers but I do have a good idea of who can answer the questions that I can’t. Students entering the program have experienced some bumps along their academic roads so far—we’ll work together to figure out how to turn that negative experience to full-steam-ahead positive energy. I can’t promise instant success—it will be good, clean, rewarding work. Like anything else, one needs sound fundamentals and must practice them until one has mastered them. The door is open…
