Office of the Provost
Message from the Provost

Thank you for visiting the Provost’s website.

As Provost, I function as the chief operating and chief academic officer of the university. I work with other vice presidents of the university to fulfill these duties, but particularly with two campus-based operating officers: the Vice President of the College and the Vice President for Graduate and Professional Programs.  I have been a faculty member and administrator at Saint Mary’s University since August 1977, beginning my career in the political science department, teaching courses in public administration, American politics, and international relations. I moved into academic administration in May 1991 as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the undergraduate College; I became Provost in January 2000. In addition to teaching and administration, I have been active in the theatre and music programs at the College, serving as rehearsal pianist and choir accompanist. I have served as faculty advisor to the Saint Mary’s chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national music fraternity, since 1981. I have been a church organist for over four decades.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is an institution committed to excellent teaching and rich learning. The university serves undergraduate and graduate students, with curricula based in the liberal arts and professional education. Through a network of people and programs, the university fulfills its educational mission “to awaken, nurture, and empower learners to ethical lives of service and leadership.”

The university is grounded in the charism of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, an order of religious men founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle (Lasallian Education) over 300 years ago. De La Salle pushed the boundaries of education and developed programs to bring instruction to those in need of education. Lasallian schools like Saint Mary’s University offer a valuable, practical approach to learning emphasizing individual growth and achievement and utilizing the collaborative efforts of teachers, staff, and students.

Teaching is at the heart of the Lasallian educational mission of Saint Mary’s University. The university believes in mentoring strong teaching, and does so through focused faculty development opportunities and by encouraging faculty innovation, research and scholarship. In fact, Saint Mary’s is already very adept at offering learning-centered education, as the most recent results of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE summary) indicate.

Thank you for your interest in Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Please contact my office if you have need for further information about the university and its programs of study.
