Update on International Travel for SMU Students
A group of Saint Mary's University of Minnesota students are scheduled to fly to London, England on Sept. 9 for an international study semester.
On August 10, British authorities announced that 24 suspected terrorists were arrested in England for allegedly plotting to blow up American airplanes. In response, Great Britain raised the threat level of a terrorist attack to "critical," and the U.S. terrorist alert was raised to "red" on all flights from Great Britain. Security is being tightened, and stricter rules issued for carry-on luggage.
On August 14, British authorities downgraded the threat level one notch, and relaxed carry-on luggage rules somewhat.
Tracy Lehnertz, Saint Mary's associate dean for off-campus programs, said the university is closely following events overseas. "The safety of our students is most important. We'll see what develops in the next few weeks, but at this point, I suspect we will have students traveling abroad, as planned."
Lehnertz noted that she hasn't heard of other colleges canceling study abroad programs due to the threat of terrorism. "Students will continue to travel abroad; it's an important part of the college experience. We'll advise students to take all the necessary and appropriate precautions." |
