Graduate students not living near the Winona campus may still access the resources and services of the Fitzgerald Library.
Access
- Subscription databases and indexes You may search our subscription databases and retrieve full text articles or citations. At the start of each research session, you will be asked to supply your user name and password. Enter the same user name and password that you use for your other St. Mary's accounts--e-mail, WebTools, Blackboard, etc. If you have access problems call Academic Computing at (507) 457-7800 or the Reference Desk at (507) 457-1562.
- MnPALS Library Catalog You will be able to search the MnPALS catalog freely off campus, but if you want to place an item on hold, check your borrowing record, or perform other personalized tasks you will need to log on. The fourteen digit bar code on the bottom of your Saint Mary's ID card is your "user name" ( begins with 235) and your last name is your "password" (or the first eight letters of your last name if you registered before June 20, 2005). We will mail books and other materials from our library collection to you. See below for more information.
Borrowing from other Libraries: Interlibrary Loan
- Journal Articles The Fitzgerald Library works through MINITEX at the University of Minnesota to obtain copies of articles for you when you cannot find the full text copies in our databases or in our print collection. Copies will be sent to your home by mail or electronically to your St. Mary's University e-mail address. When a copy of an article is sent to your e-mail account, you will be provided with a password to retrieve the article. Because of copyright regulations, the password for the article will remain active for only seven days, so you need to print out or save the article to your computer before that time. Some journal articles cannot be sent electronically. These will be sent by fax to the Fitzgerald Library, and then they will be mailed to your home address. These are yours to keep.
Submitting Interlibrary Loan Requests Use the Interlibrary Loan form. Find more information
- Books Books may be borrowed through our interlibrary loan service only if you are able to come to campus to pick them up. We are unable to mail ILL books to distant graduate students, because the time needed for mailing back and forth usually goes beyond the due date of borrowed items. We can identify any libraries near you which own a specific book that you need. With that information, you can ask any local library where you have a borrower's card to do the interlibrary loan borrowing for you.
Borrowing from the Fitzgerald: Our Mail Service
- Books We are happy to mail any books from the Fitzgerald Library collection to your home. Please telephone, e-mail, or write to us with your list of requests. The books will be due back on the last day of semester, but may be renewed once. You may renew on line, telephone our Circulation Desk (507-457-1562), or e-mail us. You will be responsible for shipping books back to us.
- Articles If the Fitzgerald Library has a subscription to the journal that you are requesting, we will copy and mail the article to you. If we do not own the journal, but the article is available in full-text format on one of the databases on our web page, we will let you know how to locate it yourself.
