General Education Program: The general education curriculum at Saint Mary's University is designed on the assumption that a student's academic work falls into three significant areas: general education, the major and electives. At a liberal arts university, the liberal arts are taught and used in various ways throughout the university. The general education curriculum consists of two complementary components: a 27-credit Disciplinary Studies Program and a 20-credit Interdisciplinary Studies Program. In addition, to graduate from Saint Mary's University all students must complete the college writing requirement, the college mathematics competency and two sport activity classes. The Disciplinary Studies Program: The Disciplinary Studies Program is designed to complement the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The 27 credits of disciplinary studies, distributed among various disciplines, incorporates the various fields of knowledge and learning commonly thought to contribute to the development and growth of educated persons. The specific goal of the Disciplinary Studies Program is to provide the student with a breadth of knowledge and exposure to a diversity of approaches to understanding the human condition. The program accomplishes this goal by requiring at least one course in each of eight areas of the curriculum (some of these credits also may satisfy requirements for major and minor programs of study):
Aesthetics Cultural Traditions Faith Traditions Human Systems Literature Moral Traditions Natural Scientific Systems Quantitative Systems
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program: The Interdisciplinary Studies Program provides a common educational experience for students at Saint Mary's University. The interdisciplinary program seeks to help students acquire and refine the knowledge and skills needed to describe, evaluate and respond appropriately to our current condition both as a society and as individuals. Students must complete the Interdisciplinary Studies Program to graduate from Saint Mary's University. Consisting of interdisciplinary, non-departmental courses, the interdisciplinary curriculum acts as a force for integration within the specialization of the major and the personal diversities of electives. Ideally, students should take an interdisciplinary course each semester. Transfer students will have certain interdisciplinary courses waived dependent upon the number of credits transferred in when admitted. The Interdisciplinary Studies courses are:
