Dr. Jim Towers graduated from the University of Iowa with a Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education in 1985. He came to Saint Mary's in 1988 as Chair of the Education Department. He also served in the role of Master of Arts in Instruction program director (a program he helped to create) in the early 1990's. Dr. Towers also was instrumental in creating and founding the Master of Education in Teaching and Learning degree at the university. After serving a year as Associate Dean in the newly-formed School of Education, he served in the position of Dean of the School of Education for a decade before stepping down to become a full-time tenured professor in the School of Education in 2005.
Dr. Towers has lived and worked in education in Australia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. In the summer of 2003, he was hired by an affiliate of Harvard University as the Director of the Educational Leadership Institute for North African and Middle Eastern educational administators and high-level educational officials, a month-long institute which was convened in Toledo, Spain.
Dr. Towers' professional/research interests are in current social issues in education, educational philosophy, and international education.
