General Resources

  • All Music Guide This guide covers more than 307,000 recordings and 1.5 million song titles. Short biographies of artists are included. The search engine allows searches by artist or group name, song title, or label.
  • American Memory : Sheet Music Collections ( Library of Congress)  Includes African American Sheet Music, 1850-1920; Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music, 1870-1885; The American Variety Stage: Vaudeville and Popular Entertainment, 1870-1920; and much more.
  • Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology-Online  "DDM-Online is an international database of bibliographic records for completed dissertations and new dissertation topics in the fields of musicology, music theory, and ethnomusicology, as well as in related musical, scientific, and humanistic disciplines." Contains more than 13,500 records.  From the Indiana University School of Music.
  • Experience Music Project This site has news features about recording technology and musical instruments. There is a directory to sites, such as online magazines, databases, legal advice sites, songwriting sites, musical associations, and festivals.
  • Grammy AwardsThis site is devoted to the Grammy Awards past and present.
  • MHN Instrument Encyclopedia The Instrument Encyclopedia is produced by the Musical Heritage Network. It is based on the holdings of Stearns Collection of Music Instruments at the University of Michigan.
  • Music ResourcesThis web site is produced by the Sibelius Academy in Finland. It provides links to web sites in all music genres. There also are links to composer biographies, research, theory, music schools, etc.
  • WWW Tinfoil Com "Dedicated to the preservation of early recorded sounds". The technology of early recording is the focus of this web site. Photos and sound files of old phonographs and wax cylinders illustrate the history of early recording equipment. The site gives advice to collectors and provides links to similar sites.
  • Ultimate Band List This Artist Direct web site locates short histories and discographies for each band. The database can be searched by artist, genre, or decade. Music news, concert ticket information, and downloads are also included.



Genre

  • Choral

Choral Pubic Domain Library CPDL is the largest free sheet music archive online. It contains more than 3200 scores. Music files can be downloaded in PDF format and there are also some MIDI files.

Choralnet : the Internet Center for Choral Music This page provides e-mail and message boards. There are links to other choral sites, including children’s and youth choirs, professional choirs, civic choirs, and college choirs. There is an index for locating and purchasing choral music.

  • Classical and Opera

The Aria Database  The Aria Database is a diverse collection of information on over 1000 operatic arias. Designed for singers and non-singers alike, the Database includes translations and aria texts of most arias as well as a collection of MIDI files of operatic arias and ensembles.

Beethoven-Haus Bonn Digital Archives According to Choice reviewers this is "one of the two most important archives of primary source documents concerning Ludwig van Beethoven. " Contains music manuscripts, first editions, letters and pictures.

Classical Composers' Archive This internet page contains biographies of more than one thousand composers.

The Classical Music Navigator Provides data and influences of 444 major composers. Glossary of musical terms included.

Classical Net This directory site contains links to both commercial and non-commercial web sites of interest to classical music enthusiasts.

Duke University Music Library Extensive links to information about  composers (medieval to modern day), music genres, and more.

J. S. Bach Home Page This web site is devoted to the composer Bach. It contains a biography, a list of his works, a list of recommended recordings, and a directory of other Bach sites.

The Mozart Project "The Life and Times of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart" This site contains a biography, list of compositions, articles by Mozart experts, a chronology of important dates in Mozart’s life, a bibliography, and links to other Mozart sites.

Operabase This web page is an international directory of opera events taking place in 400 opera houses. Users can search performance schedules by composer, title, location, and date of performance. It is available in seven languages.

  • Country Music

Country.com This is the home page of Country Music Television. It has news about the country music industry, shows and events, play lists, and country music history.

Grand Old Opry This is the official web site for the "world's longest running live radio show." It contains news items, history of the show, and tourist and ticket information.

  • Folk:

Folk Music Index "An index to recordings, tunes, and songs from traditional and contemporary sources." This web page is produced by Johns Hopkins University's Eisenhower Library. It is an index to folk music and folk songs, that are searchable by keyword, title, or performer.

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings This is a searchable index based on the recordings issued by Folkways Music as well as those of similar companies. Searching is available by genre, instrument, song title, album title, or performer. Recordings are available to purchase.

  • Jazz

Red Hot Jazz Archive This web site focuses on early jazz. It has streaming audio files of more than 1000 recordings by jazz greats. It also contains brief biographies and essays.

  • Rock, Metal, Hip Hop, & Rap

Davey D'S Hip Hop Corner This web page is dedicated to all things hip hop. There are hip hop music charts, artist biographies and interviews, album and concert reviews, articles, and a history of hip hop music.

MTV.COM The official web page for the popular television station.Contains industry news, features, program listings, and downloads.

Rap Dictionary This site is an online reference book defining words and phrases used in rap music. It is in the process of expanding its focus to include information on rap artists and links to music sites.

Rockwisdom.com This is an online quotation dictionary. It locates more than 9000 quotations from rock and other songs by subject, or artist.

Rollingstone.com This is the online version of Rolling Stone Magazine. It contains industry news, concert reviews, interviews, archived articles, and song samples.

Spin This is Spin Magazine's official page. It covers industry news, features from its current and archived issues, full text of its music polls, and tour information


Organizations


  • American Society of Composeres, Authors, & Publishers (ASCAP) ASCAP has 120,000 members who are composers, songwriters, or publishers. Its ACE database is a listing of those song titles licensed by ASCAP. Songs searches produce information on composers and publishers of the song.
  • Music Publishers' Association of the U.S. This site contains information for members, but also includes links to music information resources, links to copyright information sites, and a directory of music publishers.
