This exciting opportunity is available only to sophomores. Below you will find a schedule for the February 5th, Crossroads Conference. Don't miss this opportunity!

Tuesday, February 5th

4:00 - 6:30
Hillside Hall

Plan to attend one or more of the following sessions:

Electronic Portfolios
What do I need one of those for?!  Learn how a portfolio can showcase your skills to help you gain that job or internship you are applying for.

Graduate School 101
Although graduate school may seem like an overwhelming idea as a sophomore, it is never too early to start thinking about post-graduation options.  This workshop will outline the steps taken in preparation for graduate school.  Discussions will include test preparation (GRE, MCAT etc.), identifying graduate programs, and how to pay for graduate school.  Discussion will include information on major scholarships and fellowships.

Having MAJOR Questions? (Or Questions About Your Major?)
This workshop is designed to provide you with a few suggestions to help you successfully change your major and also explore other changes you may wish to make in your lives as sophomores. Everyone has their own reason for picking a major and there is really no right or wrong way to pick a major as long as you feel empowered to make that final decision.  We will also take a brief look at other aspects of academic life that will ultimately impact your success regardless of what major you end up choosing, such as time management and stress management.

Informational Interviewing
Mr. Dean Beckman and two students, Amy Kalina and Maddie Smith, will explain how the use of informational interviews is a great way for sophomore students to learn the kind of work people in their field of study do on a daily basis. The purposes of an informational interview will be discussed and the student presenters will explain how to go about securing and executing an effective informational interview.

Internships and Field Exploration
This session will help you to learn how to make connections that lead to meaningful internship experiences. Also get specific examples of where SMU students from various majors have interned in the past, as well as where opportunities exist now!  This is a great session for students thinking about what they would like to explore outside the classroom during their time at SMU, how to narrow down career or major interests, or even how to spend next summer.

Resume Writing
“I'm only a sophomore - I don't need a resume!” What about that summer job you are looking for? Or that great internship you hope to get next semester? Learn the basics of resume writing and how to create a winning resume that will land you your next job or internship!

Sophomore Slump: From Disorientation to Re-orientation
Lacking motivation? Unsure about your major? Wondering where life's road is taking you? Join this discussion which will lead you toward embracing your life vision and taking immediate steps toward attaining that vision.

Study Abroad
Ever dream about traveling abroad to another country? What about studying abroad for a few weeks or an entire semester? What, you think it is impossible because you can't afford it or that it won't fit in your class schedule? Find out about all your options and how it is possible to fulfill your dream!
