Students who complete the prescribed coursework, including student teaching, will be awarded the diploma at the end of three years. At that time, students may apply to complete a fourth year of studies, and those completing the work will be awarded the bachelor of science degree.

Maryknoll Institute of African Studies

Located at Saint Mary's Nairobi Campus, the Maryknoll Institute offers an intensive inculturation experience for those wishing to learn more about African cultures. Students who complete the prescribed coursework and thesis are awarded a master of arts degree in African studies.

Courses are offered during three sessions of three-week blocks from June through August. In concert with their in-class work, students complete field experiences where they research some aspect of African life by working closely with people in urban and rural areas. In addition to their courses, students must complete a thesis to be awarded the master of arts degree.

The Master of Arts degree in African studies requires the completion of six courses and a thesis for a total of thirty credits. Field research is integrated within the course. Three of the six courses are required, including one relevant to the thesis topic. Three courses are electives.
