Master of Arts in Arts and Cultural Management
Frequently Asked Questions

When may I start the Arts and Cultural Management program?
Students may start the program at the beginning of any semester (January, May, or September). Applications are taken on an ongoing basis. Two to three weeks before the start of the semester, new students are required to attend an orientation that introduces them to Saint Mary’s University and the Arts and Cultural Management program.

How long will it take to complete my Arts and Cultural Management degree?
The program can be completed on a part-time basis over 8-10 semesters or full-time over 5 semesters. Part-time usually means a minimum of 4 credits per semester in order to be eligible for financial aid; full-time status requires 8 credits or more per semester.

When do classes meet?
Classes usually meets once a week, in a four-hour time block on a weekday evening. Depending upon the credit load, there will also be class meetings on Saturdays. Some of these sessions may run longer for special projects. On occasion a class may meet during the workday in order to visit an arts organization. Students are given plenty of advance notice to make arrangements to attend.

Where do classes meet?
Classes usually meet on the Twin Cities campus. A daily listing of class locations is posted at the entrances to all campus buildings. Classes can also meet off-campus for field trips and special sessions held at local cultural organizations.

What is a residency?
The residency is an intensive internships, requiring a minimum of 240 hours of work with a single cultural organization. Residency is usually undertaken after the student has completed the majority of the required courses, and in advance of taking the Capstone Seminar. During the residency semester students analyze their internship experience with assessment papers while finalizing topic development and research for their final Capstone paper. Students are required to take the Residency/Capstone Preparation class in the semester before beginning their residency.

Where can I do my residency?
Residencies may be done in the Twin Cities or nationally at any cultural organization that meets the student’s career needs and during times that do not conflict with required course meetings. All residencies require a written agreement, signed by the residency supervisor and approved by the program director, before students can begin logging hours towards completion of requirement. Registration for residency credits can only be done by the program director.

Are paid residencies available?
Most residencies are unpaid, though from time to time an arts organization may have special funds to pay an intern. In the past, Saint Mary’s University has had an arrangement with The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts for a 10-month, part-time, paid trainee position that is held for a full-time arts and cultural management student. The Ordway position begins in the fall and fulfills all residency credits. A similar 10-month position from January through October at Arts Midwest in Minneapolis has been available. On occasion, similar partnerships are developed with other arts organizations.

What is the summative activity or final paper?
Arts and Cultural Management students complete two summative activities: a residency and a capstone class. The capstone class is the last course in the program. Students write and present a final paper that both explores relevant management literature and synthesizes concepts, knowledge, and experiences gained from across the program.
