The Lasallian Honors Program is the general education core program for honors students. It is designed to provide a rich and intellectually stimulating experience for a select group of students who wish to make the most of their education at Saint Mary’s University. Students are invited into the honors program based on their college entrance test scores, their academic record, and their co-curricular activities and achievements. The program is grounded in the university mission and the Lasallian dispositions of faith, zeal, service, and community. Its integrated curriculum in the liberal arts is grounded in the great works of the Western and Eastern cultural traditions and tutorials in music, language and the fine arts. Through a series of eight seminars, students are exposed to the best that our world has imagined, not only intellectually, but artistically and spiritually as well. Servant leadership is developed through service learning experiences in the sophomore and senior year, in which the practical dimensions of social justice are explored within the local community. Small, discussion-centered seminars and innovative tutorials in the arts are offered in a collaborative setting by outstanding teacher-scholars. Students develop advanced skills in reading, oral communication, and writing, through a curriculum that promotes active learning and prepares students for graduate study and professional work.
The ultimate goal of the Lasallian Honors Program is to awaken and nurture the intellectual, spiritual and personal development of learners in preparation for Lasallian lives of servant leadership, in which appreciation of the world’s intellectual and cultural heritage and commitment to social justice are the hallmarks. Other benefits of the honors program include small, discussion-based classes, accessible faculty who know each student by name, assistance with employment resumes as well as fellowship and graduate school applications, and camaraderie and a supportive network of faculty and students within the university community.
Students are required to maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average in order to remain in good standing in the Lasallian Honors Program. Students who spend a semester studying abroad can substitute one course taken abroad for one honors course.
First-year students take LS105 and LS155; sophomores take LS205 and LS255; juniors take LS305 and LS355, and seniors take LS405, LS455 and LS475.
