New Members Inducted

Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame adds six new members;
Luehmann, Stevenson, Weinmann, Roark also honored

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University Cardinal 'M" Club, in association with the Alumni Office, inducted six members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal 'M' Club Weekend Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2006 — Doug Freeman '91 (men's soccer), Jerad Rasmussen '91 (men's soccer), Rick Loeffelholz '98 (swimming and diving), Jill (Hocking '01) Sorenson (fastpitch softball), Diane (Wood '01) Gordon (volleyball) and Jim Pohl '70 (men's hockey) — was honored during a ceremony Saturday evening. The evening also included honors to SMU's 2005-2006 post-season award-winners, as well as last year's Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

Two-sport standout Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) and Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) of the men's tennis team were named Outstanding Female and Male Athletes, while Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) and Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) were SMU's Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

Luehmann, a first-team All-MIAC selection, was the Cardinals' leader in virtually every basketball category. The SMU senior boasted a team-best 12.9 ppg average, scoring in double figures in 17 of the Cardinals' 24 games, while also leading the team in 3-pointers (57) and assists (45). Luehmann closed out her career as SMU's all-time leader in 3-pointers (207) and 3-pointers attempted (551) — and her 1,438 points ranks No. 4 all-time.

But that was just the start for Luehmann, who won the MIAC track and field discus (outdoor), while also earning all-conference honors by finishing second in the javelin and third in the shot put. Her 1-2-3 MIAC Championship effort also earned Luehmann the conference's outstanding field athlete honor. Luehmann also qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, placing 10th in the javelin and 15th in the shot put.

Stevenson closed out a stellar four-year tennis career with his best season ever last spring, earning All-MIAC honors in both singles and doubles competition. The Cardinals' No. 1 singles player, Stevenson put together a 19-3 singles record, while also posting a near-perfect 15-2 mark at No. 1 doubles. During his four years at SMU, Stevenson earned four straight All-MIAC honors, while compiling a 64-18 singles record — including a 63-18 mark at No. 1 singles — and a 51-24 doubles mark

A philosophy major with a 3.76 grade-point-average, Roark earned the school's outstanding scholar athlete honor after a standout season on the men's golf team. Roark boasted an 81.0 stroke average in 10 matches, including a season-best two-over-par 74 in the team's dual-meet win over Macalester .

Weinmann, meanwhile, enjoyed a stellar junior year, earning All-American honors after placing eighth in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. A double-major in bio-physics and engineering physics with a 3.98 GPA, Weinmann earned All-MIAC honors in both the weight throw and the shot put, and was a national qualifier in the shot put during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
