Shelia M. Brandt, Psy.D., .L.P.

Adjunct Professor

Dr. Brandt earned her Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology in 1998 from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology. She completed her predoctoral internship at the Federal Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia. She subsequently worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections as the Director of a Residential Mental Health Unit, where she conducted violence risk assessments. Dr. Brandt was employed as Senior Doctoral Psychologist with the Wisconsin Resource Center, where she began her training in risk assessment with civilly committed sex offenders.

In 2001, Dr. Brandt returned to Minnesota to work at the Federal Correctional Institution in Waseca where she was involved in drug treatment programming and forensic evaluation. Dr. Brandt joined the staff of State Operated Forensic Services as a Forensic Evaluator in September 2005. In June 2006, she began her current tenure as the Psychology Director. Dr. Brandt joined St. Mary’s University in the Counseling Psychology Department in the fall of 2005. She also serves as adjunct faculty at Gustavus Adolphus College in the Psychology Department. Dr. Brandt has published several chapters related to the provision of psychological services to individuals in jails and prisons. She is also an Associate Editor for Psychological Services, APA’s Journal for Division 18, Psychologists in Public Service.

Dr. Brandt’s current interests include sentencing alternatives for the seriously mentally ill; international perspectives on criminal justice systems; encouraging psychologists to use the science of psychology to inform public policy and legislation related to classification, sentencing, and treatment of criminal offenders; and prescribing authority for psychologists.
