Medical Insurance

As an international student studying in the U.S you must have health insurance. It is mandatory for all international students to be covered by a health insurance policy in the U.S.  Medical insurance will not cover dental expenses or any preventative medical care. If you choose to purchase our medical insurance, the Health Services at SMUMN - Winona Campus will assist you in your purchase of medical insurance upon arrival to campus.  Saint Mary's University of Minnesota offers two options :
  1. You can purchase your own health insurance policy. If you purchase your own, make sure to bring the contract or a hard copy of the policy with you to the U.S.   Click here for more information.

  2. You can purchase an international student health insurance policy from St. Mary's University upon arrival in the U.S. The policy and procedures for health care will be explained during the international student orientation.

On-Campus Housing

Undergraduate Student Housing

Undergraduate students are required to live on-campus during their freshman (first) and sophmore (second) years at Saint Mary's. All SMU residence halls have updated amenities to help you feel at home. Each dormitory includes cable television, extra-long twin beds, computer network connections, a telephone, and internet access. Residence halls include a television lounge, computer lounge, laundry facilities, vending machines and kitchen amenities. The university does not maintain family-style apartments.

Graduate Student Housing

Graduate students may choose one of two options for housing while at Saint Mary’s University.

Off-campus Housing
Exchange visitors may choose to live off-campus. Should you choose to live off-campus, please make arrangements to arrive 2-4 weeks prior to the start of your program so you can locate suitable housing. The Office of Residence Life does maintain a list of available apartments and houses for rent or check a local newspaper for available units to rent.

Winona

Minnesota has a 4-season climate. In the Spring (March-May, temperatures range between 10-25 degrees C. Summers (June-August) are warm and sunny with temperatures of 24-33 degrees C. Fall (September to November) has temperatures cooling to 13-24 degrees C, turning the area’s hardwood forests into a profusion of color. Winter’s coldest month is January with an average temperature of -6 degrees C. We strongly recommend for international students who are coming to Minnesota to attend SMUMN for the first time to bring winter clothes from their home countries. Once the students arrive here, we will provide important information on how to dress properly during the winter to prevent illnessess.
