Admission and Application
Admission Requirements
A master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, for which applicants maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average, is required for admission. In addition, the applicant must have completed the following list of graduate courses. These courses may have been completed as part of a master’s or doctoral program, or may be taken separately at a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
- Three courses (9 semester credits) in human development, human behavior, personality theory, human sexuality, psychopathology, and behavior-pathology.
- One course (3 semester credits) in marital and family therapy covering marital and family communication, family psychology, family therapy, methods of intervention, family assessment, sex therapy, major theories of marital and family therapy such as structural, strategic, transgenerational, experiential, object relations, contextual and systemic therapy.
- One course (3 semester credits) in research covering design, methods, statistics, and special issues in research in marital and family studies or a related field.
- One course (3 semester credits) in professional studies covering professional socialization, professional organizations, legal issues, interprofessional cooperation, professional ethics, and family law.
An applicant who is lacking one or more of these courses may apply to be admitted with the status of certificate provisional and take courses in the Master of Arts program in Marriage and Family Therapy in Counseling and Psychological Services to fulfill entrance requirements.
Appliacation Process
Applicants must submit:
- A competed application form with the nonrefundable application fee.
- An official transcript issued to Saint Marys University from each graduate and undergraduate college or university attended, including an official transcript from the institution posting the applicants completed masters degree.

- A personal statement which includes the following:
- a brief description of the applicants background, training, and experience;
- a statement indicating the career goals of the applicant and his/her reasons for seeking admission to this program;
- a description of the areas which the applicant considers to be his/her strengths and areas in which the applicant wishes to develop greater strengths and abilities;
- and personal information the applicant wishes to share.
- Three reference forms that verify professional and/or volunteer experience, academic ability, professional experience, aptitude for proposed career path.
- A current résumé listing educational background and work experience.
Applicants must also complete an interview with the program staff. Application materials should be sent to the attention of the Office of Admission on the Twin Cities campus.
