Fitzgerald Library – McEnery Center

The Fitzgerald Library/McEnery Center
Ext. 1561

The library provides reference services, interlibrary loans, information, resources, and areas for group study. The library collection consists of more than 180,000 items including scholarly information databases, Internet sites, and print, microform and media materials. Librarians provide reference assistance and help in using the library collection. The library provides special facilities for media listening and viewing, personal computing labs, data ports and wireless capability, scanning, and group study. The Saint Mary’s University archives, containing documents and photographs related to the history of the university, is located in the library.

On the library home page (http://www.smumn.edu/wlibrary) can be found the library catalog, which allows users to search the Fitzgerald Library collection and the collections of many other Minnesota academic and state libraries. In addition, the library home page provides useful links to library services and policies, periodical articles, helpful web sites, and advanced information resources for your study and research needs.

Viewing and listening rooms, as well as group study rooms, are available on a first-come basis. A computer lab and various PCs and PCs with scanners are available in the library. The “Online Catalog/Databases” computers in the main floor reference room are used for accessing the library catalog, library homepage links, and scholarly resources. Please limit personal tasks such as e-mail and text editing to the personal computers elsewhere in the library.

Circulation Policies and Overdue Materials
All library circulation and transactions require your SMU campus ID card.
Loan periods at Fitzgerald Library: Materials from stacks - 28 days
Videocassettes and DVDs - 7 days
Reserves - in library use unless allowed otherwise by instructor

An overdue notice, sent by campus mail, is a courtesy reminder to renew or return materials promptly. Each library user is responsible for the timely return or renewal of all materials charged out on his or her ID card. Not receiving a notice does not excuse you from replacement fees or late charges. After a second notice is mailed, your overdue items are considered lost. A minimum replacement charge of $40.00 per item and a processing charge of $10.00 are assessed for all lost items. If you return materials after an account has been billed, the replacement charge will be refunded. The processing charge is non-refundable. All charges for overdue or lost materials are handled through the Business Office.
Delinquent overnight materials (some reserves, periodicals and reference books with permission of the librarian) are charged at a rate of $.50 per hour or portion thereof per item. Be advised that no overdue notices are sent for overnight materials.

Winona State University Library
Borrowing periods and privileges at Winona State University library may differ from those of Fitzgerald Library. Borrowers are responsible for observing Winona State library policies. Saint Mary’s and Winona State have reciprocal library borrowing privileges. This agreement requires that fine and replacement policies also be reciprocal; therefore, transcripts for Saint Mary’s students will not be released if fines, fees, or replacement costs for materials borrowed from the WSU library are not cleared. Also, library privileges at both libraries will be blocked if such accounts are not cleared.

Interlibrary Loans
For materials not owned by Fitzgerald Library, interlibrary loan services are available at no cost to the patron. This service requires advanced planning and research on your part. Plan on at least one week’s wait for materials to arrive. Requests for interlibrary loans may be entered on the “Interlibrary Loan” link on the Library’s web page, directly on the MNPals catalog, or on request forms available near the reference desk in the library.
Fees are charged for overdue or lost interlibrary loan materials. Non-cleared replacement and/or overdue charges result in your library privileges being blocked.
