Faculty Development Summer Grants

The Faculty Development Committee is pleased to offer a total of $13,500 in summer grant funding. $6,000 will be used to support grants in the category of curriculum, program, and course development. $7,500 will be used to support grants in the category of research, scholarship, and performance. The money for these grants has been made available in part by a remainder of funds from the $25,000 offered by the Office of the Provost. These research grant opportunities are intended to support faculty this summer specifically, as we transition to possible new opportunities next year.

Category – Curriculum, Program, and Course Development

For the sake of maximizing the utility of these grants, FDC has sought to avoid a cumbersome application process. The parameters and guidelines for application are as follows:

• Total funding for proposed projects should range from $400-$2,000;
• Projects should be explicitly tied to faculty development and to the enhancement of teaching and learning (curriculum, program, or course development);
• Stipends for faculty workshops/working groups are permissible ($100 per faculty member for a full day workshop);
• $500 stipend maximum per person;
• Resources may include equipment at a level matched by the department or program;
• Funds must be spent by August 14, 2009;
• Since funding of travel is traditionally the responsibility of the area Dean, grant applications involving travel must make a compelling case for the necessity of FDC funding, as well as the necessity of summer (v. autumn or spring) travel;
• Involvement of students (as research assistants or as members of a group) is acceptable, as long as the focus of the project rests clearly on faculty development and to the enhancement of teaching and learning.

Project Applications should consist of the following:
• Names of all members participating in the project;
• A description of the project, including a list of the project’s goals;
• The proposed timeframe for the project (e.g., a day workshop, or a series of hours over a month);
• A detailed budget for the project;
• A description of how you will communicate your results to the faculty.

Applications for these grants due on April 10, 2009.

Category – Research and Scholarship

For the sake of maximizing the utility of these grants, FDC has sought to avoid a cumbersome application process. The parameters and guidelines for application are as follows:

• Maximum total funding for proposed projects should be $2,500 ($2000 towards a stipend, $500 for supporting materials);
• Award of funds will be commensurate with scope of project;
• Projects should be explicitly tied to faculty development (research, scholarship, or performance);
• Funds must be spent by August 14, 2009;
• Involvement of students (as research assistants or as members of a group) is acceptable, as long as the focus of the project rests clearly on faculty development. Stipends for students would come out of the $500 for support.

Project Applications should consist of the following:
• A description of the project, including a list of the project’s goals;
• The proposed timeframe for the project;
• An indication of budget for resource materials;
• A description of how you will communicate results to a larger community (faculty, professional organization, etc.);
• A description of how this project is connected to ongoing research, departmental goals, or specific courses.

Applications for these grants due on April 20, 2008.

FDC will review applications for both categories in a thoughtful but efficient manner, with the hope of notifying applicants of decisions within two weeks of the due dates. Given the individual range of monetary award involved in the grant format, as well as the overall limitation of funding, FDC will need to prioritize applications, and the committee reserves the right to partially fund projects and to reallocate resources as it deems appropriate.

Upon completion of the project, FDC will ask for the individual or group to submit a standardized assessment form (due September 15, 2008).

If you have any questions regarding the guidelines set forth above, or if you would like feedback on a potential project, please feel free to contact one of the members of the committee.

John Kerr, Larry Luttmers, Jim Rodgers, Roger Peckover, Karen Sorvaag
