Program Information: B.S. Information Technology

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to allow an individual to work effectively in the field of Information Technology. Students learn the theories essential to this field along with current applications. This approach is intended to prepare the graduate for careers in a continually evolving field.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand current and emerging information infrastructure systems including applications, hardware, software, data, people, process and organizations.
  2. Understand information technology is a business tool, which supports the business goals of the enterprise.
  3. Apply knowledge of information technology to design systems for business applications.
  4. Communicate effectively in a variety of modes.
  5. Understand and apply the principles of successful project management.
  6. Understand the ethical implications of their actions.
  7. Work effectively with diverse populations.
  8. Continue learning throughout their lives.
  9. Understand and apply concepts and principles of a technical area of specialization.
  10. Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  11. Demonstrate the general education competencies required for graduation.

Degree Requirements


A minimum of 122 semester credits is required for graduation with the Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Mary’s University.  All students must meet the 10 general education competencies.  A minimum of 45 credits is needed to complete the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program:

IT301 Introduction to Information Technology 3 cr.
IT302 Networks and Telecommunications 3 cr.
IT303 Data and Database Management Systems 3 cr.
IT304 Systems Analysis and Design 3 cr.
IT305 Business Systems Development 3 cr.
IT306 Applications of Information Infrastructure 3 cr.
MG490 Bachelor of Science Completion Capstone 3 cr.

Required Management Courses: 6 cr.
MG306 Information Ethics 3 cr.
MG408 Project Management 3 cr.

Required Communications Courses: 6 cr.
CM310 Oral Communications 3 cr.
CM409 Technical Writing 3 cr.

Specialty Track Courses: 12 cr. 
Students are required to complete 12-15 credits of the Required Information Technology Courses before taking courses in any of the specialty tracks.

IT423 Network Planning and Design 3 cr.

Systems Management
IT430 Information Security 3 cr.
IT431 Network Management 3 cr.
IT432 Systems Management I: Concepts Models 3 cr.
IT433 Systems Management II: Tools and Application 3 cr.

Industry Certification 12 cr.
