Program Information

The vital arts and cultural community in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and the continued need for knowledgeable and innovative administrators create the perfect setting for a professional academic program for arts leaders. The Master of Arts in Arts Administration focuses on the nonprofit arts and the increasing interrelationship with the for-profit sector. Emphasis is placed on applied leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as business capabilities. Through a blend of coursework and practical application the program focuses on nonprofit issues such as board governance, nonprofit finances, fund development, and arts marketing while also exploring the entrepreneurial and for profit aspects of the cultural community. Completion of the program prepares students to advance into program and leadership positions within performing and visual arts as well as arts service organizations.

Students complete the 36-credit minimum program on an intensive full-time schedule over 5 terms or on a part-time schedule over 8 terms. Classes meet throughout the year during the evenings and Saturdays. Students usually complete two internships of 60 hours each and a professional residency of no less than 240 hours. Residencies may be completed at arts institutions around the country. The program culminates with an integration paper exploring a topic related to the residency and delivered by students at an annual arts administration symposium comprised of graduate students, faculty, and arts professionals.

The program is designed for current arts organization staff members seeking to deepen their management and organizational skills, those planning to move into the cultural management field from other arenas, and college graduates with an arts related background.
