The undergraduate Theatre Arts program at Saint Mary’s provides students with the opportunity to develop pre-professional theatre skills in the areas of performance, design, production, and management. We expect our students to be able to attain entry level positions in theatres around the country as well as entrance to graduate level studies, if they choose. General Department Goals Engaging in the department’s curriculum or productions will facilitate the development of the following knowledge, skills and dispositions:
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity by understanding how theatre functions within a particular historical and cultural context;
- Problem solving and critical thinking by analyzing dramatic literature for interpretation and production;
- An aesthetic sensibility by engaging in the practice and process of theatrical production and discovering meaningful approaches to dramatic criticism;
- Research and communication skills by engaging in efficient and ethical research on various topics of the theatre arts; and
- Specific knowledge of important theatrical movements, works of dramatic literature, and dramatic theory from the past and present. to take advanced courses as well as to prepare for the senior project, graduate school applications, and career choices.

Theatre majors who meet institutional requirements and who are in good standing in the department are expected to participate in the London theatre semester in London, England. The London theatre experience, under the guidance of Saint Mary’s University faculty, includes a variety of classes in theatre, as well as courses focusing on broader enrichment. Students will attend numerous performances in London’s West End, Off-West End, and Fringe theatres. Students will have opportunities for production experiences. Program activities can also include travel to various sites in the United Kingdom.

Students completing the BA in Theatre Arts may wish to choose one of the following areas. Focusing on one area provides the opportunity to take advanced courses as well as to prepare for the senior project, graduate school applications, and career choices.

The Lillian Davis Hogan Scholarships are endowed four-year renewable scholarships for bachelor degree-seeking students intending to major in Theatre Arts.
All scholarship candidates must:
- complete the standard undergraduate admission process and be accepted to the university.
- participate in an interview with theatre faculty, ideally on the Saint Mary’s campus, or at another designated site.
- include a resume of theatre activities, honors, and awards.
- arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to the scholarship committee by February 1. One of the letters should be from a theatre teacher or director.
- include a type-written, double spaced essay answering each of the following questions:
- Why do you wish to pursue a Theatre Arts major at Saint Mary’s?
- At this point in time, do you have any career aspirations?
- Reflect on the significance of the theatre experiences noted in your resume of theatre activities.
- In what other extra-curricular activities have you participated?
- If you had to chose a career other than theatre, what would it be and why?
- present a prepared audition monologue, a portfolio representing technical and/or design work, or a theatre-related research paper.
