Duane Udstuen Program Director, Master of Arts in Education B.S., M.S. Minnesota State University—Mankato Ed.S. University of Minnesota—Twin Cities
In addition to being a classroom teacher, Duane Udstuen has served as principal in both elementary and middle schools, and as executive director of Teaching and Learning in the Minnetonka Public Schools. He currently teaches courses in curriculum design and curriculum leadership at Saint Mary’s.

Karen Filla has devoted much of her career to the leadership of Special Services for the Hopkins School District, serving as director for 14 years. She is active statewide in professional development, organizational development, leadership coaching, and the facilitation of strategic planning.

For over 17 years Lani Brown has taught at Saint Mary’s University where she currently teaches “Effective Teaching Techniques,” “Summary Paper Presentation” and “Curriculum Design.” For nearly 25 years she has served Delano Public Schools as curriculum director and as an English teacher.

Bryan Fleming has taught in the Albuquerque, New Mexico and Hopkins, Minnesota schools, and is now associate director of admissions at The Blake School. In his role as faculty at St. Mary’s University, he teaches “Teaching Strategies for the Gifted and Talented Classroom.”

Deb Gillman serves Paynesville Area Elementary School as district curriculum director, ECFE coordinator, and assessment coordinator. At St. Mary’s University, where she has taught for 15 years, she currently teaches “Summary Paper Presentation.”

With degrees in communications and his doctorate in educational policy and administration, Willie Johnson is uniquely qualified to teach “Communication Skills for Educators.” He has served as adjunct professor at St. Mary’s since 1999.
Jerry Peterson B.A. Augsburg College M.A. University of St. Thomas LIC. St. Mary’s University of Minnesota
Jerry Peterson is principal at Vadnais Heights Elementary School in the White Bear Lake School District. He teaches “Topics and Trends in Education” at Saint Mary’s, where he has been on the faculty for 13 years.
Craig A. Roble B.A. Gustavus Adolphus College M.A., Ed.D. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota
In addition to teaching social studies, Craig Roble has served as a team leader, department chair, and now executive board member of the Minnesota Council for the Social Studies. Active in both district level professional development and mentoring, he teaches the “Educational Research” and “Summary Paper” courses at St. Mary’s.
Hugh Skaja B.A., B.S., M.S. St. Cloud State University Ed.D. University of St. Thomas
Hugh Skaja is executive director of Human Resources for the St. Cloud Public Schools. Prior to that, he served as an elementary school principal. At St. Mary’s, Hugh teaches “Teacher and the Law,” which prepares teachers to deal with their legal and district policy responsibilities, addressing such questions as which statutes are more important to teachers, what district policies require particular attention, and other educational issues.
Connie Spartz B.S., M.S. St. Cloud State University Post-graduate work, University of Connecticut and Ball State University
Connie Spartz teaches “Brain Based Learning,” and sometimes “Psychological Development of Children.” Until her retirement, she was director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Willmar Public Schools. Her teaching is driven by her passion to connect with some of Minnesota’s best educators, and to help teachers understand the implications of brain research. |
