Program Description

This program is composed of course work, clinical practice, and a research project that enables the student to simultaneously earn a master of science degree in Nurse Anesthesia from Saint Mary’s University and a certificate in Nurse Anesthesia from the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia. Once awarded the certificate, the graduate is eligible to write the certifying examination given by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. Successful completion of the certifying examination entitles the graduate to be known as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). The completion of the master of science degree not only recognizes the students’ educational accomplishment, but also expands their opportunities to secure positions of leadership within the health care field.

Students enrolled in the master of science degree program must meet the admission requirements of the Saint Mary’s University graduate program and the admission requirements of the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia.

Students must earn 48 semester credits to receive the master’s degree. 25 of these credits are transferred into Saint Mary’s University from the School of Anesthesia upon successful completion of specified science courses and clinical practica.

The other 23 credits are earned through completion of Saint Mary’s University courses. These courses include the principles of anesthesia practice, the management of people and resources, and in the understanding of scientific research. Prior to the conclusion of the program the student is required to complete a scholarly research project and present this study to a faculty research committee and a group of the student’s peers.

Transfer Credit

In order to receive the master’s degree, the student must earn 25 transfer credits by successfully completing those courses as identified in the program curriculum as “transfer credit courses.”

Dismissal Policy

Dismissal from the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia does not necessarily imply dismissal from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. A student in good standing with Saint Mary’s University may apply for transfer into an alternative graduate program.

Graduation Criteria

Students enrolled in the degree program must meet the graduation criteria of both the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia and Saint Mary’s University. A student must have all degree requirements completed prior to graduation. An application for graduation and graduation fee are additional graduation requirements for Saint Mary’s University.
