The General Education Program of the undergraduate College at Saint Mary’s University strives to embody the mission of the university by helping to develop students who are lifelong learners committed to service and leadership.
Students working to acquire a Bachelor of Arts degree choose a program of courses comprised of study in the major, electives, and general education requirements. In order to achieve the general education requirements, each student must complete a common course of study in one of the two Core Programs—the Lasallian Core Traditions Program or the Lasallian Honors Program—and select from a choice of courses in eight different content areas. In addition, students will have integrated into their coursework four primary skills areas—Writing, Oral Communications, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving.
The General Education curriculum at Saint Mary’s, when combined with a student’s study in the major and with electives, provides students with competency in an area of disciplinary or professional study while empowering them to continue to learn and serve after they have completed their studies for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Lasallian Core Traditions Program The Lasallian Core Traditions Program is comprised of four courses, one taken each year of an undergraduate’s study at Saint Mary’s. Through the program's four integrated courses, students are inspired to think critically of the ethical challenges that confront them in a complex, global community and to become familiar with the Lasallian virtues of leadership and service. Students who follow the Lasallian Core Traditions Program must also complete eight courses in the Content Areas.
Lasallian Honors Program The Lasallian Honors Program is an alternative general education core program. Students are invited into the program based on their college entrance test scores, their academic record, and their co-curricular activities and achievements. The Honors Program strives to inspire students toward the Lasallian virtues of leadership and service while following a curriculum that is founded on Great Books Seminars and service learning. Students in the Honors Program complete eight core courses (one each semester) as well as four courses in the Content Areas.
