The De La Salle Language Institute of Saint Mary's University offers an intensive program for students from non-English speaking countries to master the English language and to participate in the life of a North American university.
Students study for one semester or one academic year (two semesters). During this time, the major coursework is in English as a Second Language. In addition, students study the history, traditions, culture and customs of the United States. Elective courses may be selected from the regular undergraduate program on a credit or audit basis with advisor's approval. The students are housed throughout the residence halls on campus. They are encouraged to participate in the various intramurals, activities and programs that are offered throughout the year. In addition, there are a number of special programs and trips that are targeted specifically for the De La Salle students as a means of personal support and spiritual, cultural and geographic awareness and enrichment.
Upon successful completion of the internationally recognized Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), students may elect to continue their studies at Saint Mary's University as degree-seeking students. For some students, the year in the De La Salle Language Institute is in preparation for other career-related activities on further study in their home countries.
