About the fellowship

In partnership with Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and its Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership, the Remick Fellowship program will provide financial resources for young scholars preparing to enter the teaching profession in order to create an incentive for them to become educators in Catholic schools.

Admission Requirements

The Remick Fellows program responds to a felt need in American Catholic education: teachers at all levels who are not only exemplary in the skills required to be an effective teacher of subject matter, but also soundly educated and mentored in ethical leadership skills.

The program is endowed by Mary Ann and Jack Remick of Rochester, Minn. Throughout their lives - as students in Catholic educational systems at all levels, and as parents of five children who have benefitted from Catholic education - the Remicks have been moved to support the future of Catholic education: "Our goal in establishing the Remick Fellows program is to allow young college graduates to prepare themselves to become fully committed, competent educators in Catholic schools. It is our hope that they become dynamic role models for their students, as well as teach their students specific ways of being Catholic leaders far into the future. We hope this will provide a spark that will enliven the school systems in which Remick Fellows will teach."

Goals of the Program

The goals of the Remick Fellows program are:

  • To develop ethical leadership skills in Catholic educators;
  • To provide Catholic educators with the skills to enhance character development in their students and to teach their students ethical leadership skills;
  • To develop and promote an educational paradigm based on character development and ethical leadership skills for Catholic educators throughout the United States; and
  • To provide a biannual conference with the purpose of creating a community of Catholic educators skilled in and dedicated to character development and ethical leadership in Catholic schools.

Overview of the Program

Remick Fellows will participate in a one-year program which provides the opportunity for those who have earned a bachelor's degree in a variety of fields to acquire teacher licensure in Elementary Education (K-6) with an Early Adolescence Specialty (5-8) or Early Adolescence/Young Adult (grades 5-12) in the disciplines of mathematics, social studies, modern foreign languages, communication and language arts, life science, physical science, and music, and a Master of Arts in Instruction (MAI) degree.

Those who have studied theology and who wish to teach religion in the Catholic schools will receive the MAI degree, but not state licensure. Professional education will be administered by the School of Education of Saint Mary's University. The accompanying prospectus indicates specific requirements for the MAI.

Fellows will participate in course work with other graduate students, complete student teaching, and participate in special courses and activities which focus on character development and the acquisition of ethical leadership skills. Recognizing the importance of these leadership skills, Fellows will learn specific methods of teaching leadership skills to their students, and modeling these skills to their colleagues in Catholic education.

During the course of their program, Fellows will participate in discussions, activities and programs planned for the enrichment of their lives as Catholic educators.

Responsibilities of Remick Fellows

  • Complete both licensure requirements and the requirements for the Master of Arts in Instruction;
  • Complete student teaching in either Rochester or Winona, Minn. Catholic schools;
  • Participate in the biannual Remick Conference for Catholic Educators sponsored by Saint Mary's; and
