Counseling Services exists to assist you in achieving optimal personal well-being.
The college years are exciting but also sometimes stressful. Many students encounter obstacles that interfere with their studies, with their relationships, and with their peace of mind and well-being. In addition to the natural stresses that occur in college some students now come to college having already been treated for mood or other psychological and psychiatric issues. While distressful, professional and caring SMU counselors are available to assist students deal not only with the present issues but also to use them as opportunities for growth.
Both individual and group counseling, as well as a variety of personal growth workshops are available to address a wide variety of issues and to assist students to make the most of their college experience. Many students report that counseling helps them to gain more satisfying personal lives and successful academic careers.
How do I begin Counseling?
Appointments for counseling may be made by calling Ext. 1773 (507-457-1773) or by stopping at the reception desk in the Wellness Center, Room 9, Toner Student Center (lower level).
Walk-in appointments are available from 11:00 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday.
Your first appointment will provide you with an opportunity to talk confidentially with a counselor about your immediate concerns. By the end of the appointment, your counselor will be able to offer you some initial impressions of what resources or services would be most helpful for you. Some students find that talking with a counselor once is sufficient to resolve the immediate concern. If further services would be beneficial, these will be discussed and a recommendation will be made by the counselor. These additional services may include resources offered by Counseling Services or referral to another campus or community resource.
