SP 406 - Urban Studies in Buenos Aires Culture - Spring 2015

SP 406 - Urban Studies in Buenos Aires Culture - 3 credits
Spanish Department Elective

Program Overview
Participants will gain an in-depth acquaintance with the city of Buenos Aires through learning in the classroom and a 18-day tour of the city. They will explore the layout and geography of the city and its more than 50 distinct neighborhoods, participate in representative cultural experiences, meet and dialogue with major artists, intellectuals, and scholars, and engage in a research project.

Cost
Students will be charged a course fee of $2,200.00 - $2,500.00*  The course fee covers all in country housing and most in country travel, planned activities, and meals.

*Cost will vary based on student enrollment. A minimum of 8 students are required for the course.
*Cost of airfare, passport, Argentina reciprocity fee, and some meals and in-country activities are not included in the course fee and are the responsibility of the student.

Eligibility
Students need to have a GPA of 2.0 or higher and sophomore status. Eligibility will also be based on recommendations and record of behavior at SMU.  

Prerequisite: SP 242 or permission of Instructor

Application Process
Visit the Study Abroad Office to apply and register for SP 406. 

Students that wish to drop SP 406 need to withdraw through the Study Abroad Office by 4:00 pm on January 12, 2015 to avoid paying the course fee. Those who remain enrolled at that time will be responsible for the full course fee.

Visit the Study Abroad Office, located in Saint Mary’s Hall, Room 103. 

Travel Dates (anticipated)

May 10 - May 27, 2015

Trip Highlights
Students will have a diverse daily schedule that explores the major cultural themes of the city including mini-courses and lectures, visits to significant historical and cultural sites, conversations with prominent local artists, academics, government officials, and cultural exchanges with local students.

Sites
El Once, La Boca, Puerto Madero, San Telmo, the Presidential Palace/La plaza de mayo, Hotel del Inmigrante, MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires), Recoleta Cemetery, the University of Buenos Aires, and Museo Evita.

Activities
Day trip and ferry ride to Uruguay, attend a play, tango performance, a traditional Sunday asado (barbeque), tutor English at a local high school, participate in a service project, and attend a football match. 

Housing
Students will be staying at a Lasallian facility, Colegio De La Salle, that will provide dormitory style accommodations and breakfast and lunch in a cafeteria.
